CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — Three round-the-world sailors reached land safely Thursday after sharks nearly sank their catamaran in the Coral Sea.Both of the inflatable hulls on their 9-meter (30-foot) boat were damaged in several attacks by what were thought to be cookiecutter sharks — a small species not considered dangerous to people. Aerial photos of the men's rescue showed major damage to the boat, which was nearly submerged and a front section of one hull was completely missing. In this photo provided by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority, a partially submerged catamaran is shown during a rescue of 3 sailors in the Coral Sea, Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2023. Sarah Millfelt pulled a pink cloth off a tray of desserts, with a magician-like flourish. She poured some coffee into a quirky handmade mug. Her three small dogs — Rancho Cucamonga, Trixie Pearl and Stanley Tucci — bustled around our chairs as we sat down in her backyard.“Chill,” she said to them, smiling. “This is big for mommy!”After 20 years at the Minneapolis arts organization Northern Clay Center — eight as its director — Millfelt launched Milly’s Kitchen Madness & Bakes three years ago. Customers can buy subscriptions for weekly dessert boxes, like community-supported agriculture programs that support local farmers. She’s a licensed cottage baker; everything is made in her home kitchen in Stillwater.Millfelt herself is magnetic and irreverent, and her simple and extraordinary desserts speak for themselves. Her lemon scones, impossibly soft and airy, will ruin you for all other scones. Her chocolate chip cookies have a salty nuttiness that provides a backbone other cookies d...

Ask Amy: Widow faces opposition over new friend

Published Sat, 08 Feb 2025 00:48:25 GMT

Dear Amy: My husband of 50 years died over two years ago.I was happy and content with my single life and have had no interest in dating.Last year I went on a group trip to Spain. There were several single older people on the tour.I was totally shocked when a gentleman asked me to join him for lunch when we returned home. Both our spouses had died at about the same time and we had a lot of similar interests.Over the last year we have become great companions. The trouble is that one of my daughters is adamant about not wanting to meet him.I am not interested in marriage, only friendship. He has no local family. I would like to have him meet her family and I’d like to have him celebrate with us for holidays. She says that she will let me know when she is ready.I feel very bad that I have to exclude my friend when my daughter is around.Related ArticlesAsk Amy | Ask Amy: A family loss leads to a marital move Ask Amy | Ask Amy: Long-time affair leads to post-mortem ...

Fuse indoors and outdoors at each entrance

Published Sat, 08 Feb 2025 00:48:25 GMT

Builders embrace the fact that flexible space and cohesion between the indoors and the outdoors are hallmarks of today’s living. In fact, new-home design plans began answering the need for indoor-outdoor transitions before homebuyers actively demanded it.That’s especially true in the Bay Area and Northern California, where nature is as much a part of our lives as family is.Over the past few years, new-home construction has emphasized greater use of natural light. Juxtaposed with metals, glass, woods, concrete and light-colored stone the result is a sense of welcoming brightness from the threshold through to the back patio.Although curb appeal may play a part in first impressions, people generally live in the homes they buy, not on the curbs in front of them. That’s why each entrance to the home provides an opportunity to set the mood, the ambience or the tone for what comes next.Front porch and walkWhether it’s a walkway to a few concrete stairs, a long front porch or a courtyard th...
