Sudan doctors: At least 100 killed in Darfur clashes

CAIRO (AP) — Clashes that erupted last month between armed fighters in a city in Sudan’s restive Darfur region killed at least 100 people, according to Sudan’s Doctors Syndicate.Hospitals were still out of service in the Darfur city of Genena and an accurate count of the wounded was still hard to make, the doctors’ union added in a statement posted on its official Facebook page late Sunday. The fighting in Genena, which broke out a few days after Sudan’s two rival generals took up arms against each other in the capital of Khartoum, pointed to the possibility that the conflict could engulf other parts of the East African country. The doctors’ union did not specify the two parties to the clashes in Genena, a city of around half a million people located near the border with Chad that has been a flashpoint since the early days of the fighting. Late last month, residents described how armed fighters, many wearing the uniform of the Rapid Support Forces paramilitary, rampaged through...Russia bans jet skis, ride-hailing ahead of WWII tributes

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Russia enacted a major security clampdown ahead of Tuesday’s annual commemorations marking the defeat of Nazi Germany in World War II, curbing the use of drones, jet skis and car-sharing services in its largest cities amid its 14-month war with Ukraine. At least 21 Russian cities canceled May 9 military parades — the staple of Victory Day celebrations across Russia — for the first time in years, Russian media said. Regional officials blamed unspecified “security concerns” or vaguely referred to “the current situation” for the restrictions and cancellations. It was not clear whether their decisions were taken in coordination with the Kremlin.Last week, Russia — which hasn’t witnessed the carnage endured by Ukraine during the invasion — was rattled by ambiguous official reports that two Ukrainian drones flew into the heart of Moscow under the cover of darkness and reached the Kremlin before being shot down. Media and local officials have blamed other sporadic...Mother’s Day gift guide: Wheels, books, tech and more

ISTANBUL (AP) — More than a dozen people have been detained over violence against an opposition election rally in Turkey’s eastern city of Erzurum over the weekend, the country’s justice minister said Monday. Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu of the main opposition Republican People’s Party, CHP, was speaking atop a campaign bus Sunday afternoon when a large group of roughly 200 protesters began throwing rocks. Imamoglu was campaigning on behalf of CHP leader and presidential candidate Kemal Kilicdaroglu, the main opponent to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, days before the May 14 presidential and parliamentary elections. He maintained that police and pro-Erdogan officials in Erzurum allowed the attack to go ahead. “There are citizens here who are injured, and you police are just standing by,” Imamoglu is heard saying in footage of the incident. “Erzurum governor, Erzurum mayor, I will be filing a criminal complaint against you.” The video later shows Imamoglu being taken inside by his e...Are legal psychedelic drugs inevitable?

In today’s Big Story podcast, the past few years have brought about a perfect storm of new knowledge, loosened restrictions and increased curiosity when it comes to psychoactive drugs like psilocybin mushrooms and LSD. So much so, that those who study or observe the field, are calling it the “psychedelic renaissance.”Canada’s health landscape is changing, says Erika Dyck, the Canada Research Chair in the history of health and social justice, and author of Psychedelic Psychiatry: LSD from Clinic to Campus.“There’s a whole psychedelic underground that kind of flirts with the law in a variety of ways, that has also been promoting the resurgence or reemergence of psychedelics in medicine,” says Dyck.Right now, in cities like Toronto and Vancouver, you can buy psilocybin in storefront dispensaries – and although that appears to be illegal, not much is being done about it.So how’d we get to this point? And what’s next for psychedelics? You can subscribe ...Enbridge names Patrick Murray as CFO, Vern Yu moving to be CEO at AltaGas
