Janet Mills on Thursday declared a state of emergency, and the state was under its first hurricane watch in 15 years. The water-logged region prepared for 20-foot (6-meter) waves offshore and wind gusts up to 70 mph (112 kph), along with more rain.Eastern Maine was under the hurricane watch while the rest of the state and an area extending south through Massachusetts were under a tropical storm warning. Powerful winds were expected to arrive late Friday in southern New England.Although Lee did not contribute to the recent flooding, it threatened to exacerbate conditions in a region that is already much too wet.The Coast Guard and emergency management agencies warned New England residents to be prepared, and utility co...

Prime Mania has fully taken hold in the football world.A pair of alums coaching in the NFL are reveling in the warp-speed revitalization coach Deion Sanders has overseen at Colorado.Eric Bieniemy, of course, was CU’s leading rusher when it won the national championship in 1990. Now, he’s the Washington Commanders offensive coordinator and is returning to the Front Range on Sunday for a game against the Broncos.“I’m happy for the things that have taken place down in Boulder,” Bieniemy told reporters Thursday before throwing a jab at Nebraska, which CU beat 34-16 on Saturday. “It’s always good to beat the University of ‘Nowledge. Nobody got that one, huh? That’s alright.”On Sunday afternoon, he’ll match wits with Broncos defensive coordinator Vance Joseph, a longtime friend who was a freshman quarterback on that title team.Joseph’s been closer to the action in Boulder, though he’s still watching from afar, in a way, thanks to the scheduling demands of the NFL season.GLENDALE, ARIZONA ...

Kiszla: For his next trick, CU Buffs coach Deion Sanders could drive CSU football into oblivion

Published Sat, 08 Feb 2025 01:15:48 GMT

While we loudly sing the praises of Deion Sanders as the miracle worker that has brought CU football back from the dead, has all the gold and glitz of Coach Prime blinded us to the imminent demise of college sports?“If we’re going to have to pay the players, college athletics that we’ve been used to will be obliterated. College athletics as we’ve known it will be gone within three years,” Chuck Neinas told me Thursday.“CU won’t have skiing, won’t have track and won’t have soccer. They will all become club sports, with no financial aid for teams that will have to find their own coach and make their own travel.”For more than 50 years, Neinas has been one of the most influential power brokers in college sports, serving as a conference commissioner, NCAA executive and disruptor. Long ago he was a pioneer in mining big television money that now contributes heavily to the portal transfer chaos of name, image and likeness Sanders has exploited to remake the Buffaloes into a top 25 pr...
