The county has reached a $7.5 million settlement in a civil complaint filed by the family of Kurt Andras Reinhold, a homeless Black man shot and killed in 2020 by an Orange County Sheriff’s Department deputy in San Clemente. The family filed the wrongful-death lawsuit following Reinhold’s death on Sept. 23, 2020, when a confrontation escalated between him and two sheriff’s deputies who were with the department’s homeless outreach team after Reinhold had been stopped on suspicion of jaywalking. The shooting occurred after Reinhold reached for one of the deputy’s guns during a scuffle, according to officials with the Sheriff’s Department. The Orange County District Attorney’s Office announced in February 2022 that it had determined the deputy was justified in the shooting, clearing him of criminal wrongdoing. Prosecutors said their investigation indicated Reinhold had not jaywalked, but had violated a vehicle code by crossing during a red hand signal, giving deputies justification for ...Check out these 4 cool ’80s modern rock shows happening in the Bay Area

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- The San Francisco Department of Public Health is encouraging all residents who want protection from mpox (formerly known as Monkeypox) to receive both doses of the mpox vaccine to prevent a spike in cases during summer festivals. "As the summer months and celebrations surrounding Pride approach, now is the ideal time for people to ensure they are protected," SFDPH wrote. SFDPH strongly recommends 2-dose vaccination for "all men, trans people, and nonbinary people who have sex with men, trans people, or nonbinary people. These groups are likely to be among those most affected if mpox cases were to increase again in San Francisco," health officials wrote. All people living with HIV are also strongly encouraged to get the 2-dose vaccination. "We want to make sure that everyone can enjoy a happy and healthy Pride," said San Francisco Health Officer Dr. Susan Philip. "If you received your first dose of the mpox vaccine, even if it was in the fall, it is ...US to limit asylum at Mexico border, open 100 migration hubs as COVID-19 restrictions end

CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico (AP) — President Joe Biden’s administration on Thursday will begin denying asylum to migrants who show up at the U.S.-Mexico border without first applying online or seeking protection in a country they passed through, according to a new rule released Wednesday, as U.S. officials warned of difficult days ahead as a key limit on immigration is set to expire. The rule comes just a day before the U.S. ends use of Title 42, which had allowed it to limit migration in the name of preventing the spread of COVID-19. The change use has led to concerns about whether the U.S. has the necessary tools to control migration. The rule announced Wednesday is part of new measures meant to crack down on illegal border crossings while creating new legal pathways, including a plan to open 100 regional migration hubs across the Western Hemisphere, administration officials said. BERLIN (AP) — Germany gave final approval Wednesday for a Chinese company to take a significant minority stake in the operator of a container terminal at the Hamburg port, following concerns that a larger buy-in might pose a national security risk. The government said it would stick to a compromise agreed to last year barring COSCO Shipping from acquiring more than than 24.99% of the Tollerort terminal of Hamburg port logistics company HHLA.Two junior partners in Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s governing coalition — the Greens party and the Free Democrats — demanded the cap last year, warning that a larger stake could give China undue control over Germany’s critical infrastructure.HHLA said the approval would allow it to become a preferred handling location for COSCO. About 30% of the goods handled in the Port of Hamburg already come from China or go to China, it said, adding that the transaction would be finalized soon.COSCO also holds stakes in several other European ports, includin...Latest news
