Editorial: What exactly are we saving Belmar Park from?

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 18:50:30 GMT

Belmar Park is a beautiful urban oasis that should be protected for both the park’s important wildlife habitat and recreation value. However, we are not convinced demolishing an existing two-story 43,000 square-foot office space and the surrounding parking lots to build a five-story 412-unit condominium poses an actual threat to either the wildlife or the recreation at Belmar Park. The City of Lakewood using eminent domain to take part of the land, as called for by the Save Belmar Park website, would be a misguided overreaction. The four acres proposed for redevelopment in the heart of Lakewood’s Belmar juts right out into Belmar Park. We do understand why there has been an outcry to make certain the owners of 777 S. Yarrow St. understand the responsibility that comes with building on land surrounded on three sides by a crucial city park. The land in question last sold as part of a deal in 2021 for $6 million, according to Jefferson County Property Records, and according to The Denver ...

Stock upOLB Nik BonittoBonitto missed two games because of a knee injury, acknowledged it wasn’t anywhere near 100% on Sunday and still went out and logged a couple of tackles for loss over 40 snaps. Given the way Bonitto’s rookie year went in 2022, his growth both on the field and apparently in approach and preparation go squarely in the positives category this season. He’s an important part of what Denver’s defense is doing into the future. He enters the final game of the season with seven sacks and 12 TFLs and a demonstrated ability to consistently pressure opposing quarterbacks.ILB Alex SingletonSingleton’s perhaps flown under the radar this year, but his tackling numbers continue to jump off the page. After 11 more against the Chargers, the inside linebacker is up to 162 for the year and needs nine Sunday to pass Michael Brooks for most by a Bronco since at least 1991. He also has tied for the most 10-plus tackle games (12) in a single season in the NFL since at least 1999 and ...
