New California bill proposes 'relocatable' housing units for homeless

Published Sat, 01 Mar 2025 00:20:09 GMT

A new bill proposed in the California legislature wants to explore a new solution to housing the state's unsheltered individuals: relocatable housing units. The bill was proposed by California Sen. Josh Becker (D-San Mateo), and would lay down the groundwork for moveable "opportunity housing units" to be placed on vacant, unused land.Senate Bill 634 was authored in concert with Becker's team, nonprofit housing developer DignityMoves, and two other organizations aiming to reduce homelessness in California. The problem with housing California's homeless, according to the bill's authors, is the cost and time required to buy land and build permanent structures. In a press release issued by DignityMoves, the nonprofit argues that cities and counties are working hard to meet the challenges set by the state to meet housing requirements, but traditional obstacles slow down the process. Meanwhile public entities have "thousands of parcels of excess land not currently being used," the orga...

Show of hands: Has there been a single instance in recent months in which you've called customer service and weren't told that because of "unusually heavy call volume," you'll be on hold for the rest of your natural life?Yeah, that's what I thought.Customer service became roadkill during the pandemic and has yet to recover. The latest example of this involves Facebook and Instagram parent Meta Platforms.CNBC relates how Los Angeles influencer Katya Karlova discovered that her Instagram account had been hacked, resulting in stolen content and fake accounts."This is really damaging," she told the network. "This is my brand and I work really hard to build it to be something impactful and positive."The problem, according to CNBC, is that after 21,000 Meta workers got sacked since last fall, customer service has been wiped out. Businesses and influencers often can't reach anyone when there are problems with their accounts. The problem isn't unique to Meta or various other tech companies t...

Judge: Dominion can force Murdochs to testify at trial

Published Sat, 01 Mar 2025 00:20:09 GMT

By Marshall Cohen | CNNDominion Voting Systems can force Fox Corporation executives Rupert and Lachlan Murdoch to testify on the witness stand at this month’s scheduled defamation trial, a Delaware judge said Wednesday.Delaware Superior Court Judge Eric Davis said at a hearing that if Dominion subpoenas the Murdochs to testify in-person, he would not quash those subpoenas, and the Murdochs would need to show up to the courthouse. Dominion has sued Fox News for defamation, and says it was defamed by the right-wing network when Fox hosts and guests claimed in 2020 that its voting systems illegally rigged the election.“They are relevant to the case… if Dominion wants to bring them live, they need to issue a trial subpoena, and I would not quash it,” Davis said. He added that that “it would be my discretion that they come” to testify in-person at the trial, which is scheduled to begin later this month in Wilmington, Delaware.“Both parties have m...
