DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Countries once colonized by empires are striking back on global warming — and they have the pope’s blessing.Leaders of developing nations jumped into Saturday’s high-level speeches at the U.N. climate summit to press rich industrial countries to share their knowhow to fight global warming and ease the financial burdens they face — while trumpeting their own natural resources that swallow heat-trapping carbon in the air.The 28th annual U.N. Conference of the Parties, or COP28, in the oil-rich United Arab Emirates, featured about 150 presidents, prime ministers, royals and other leaders who are presenting their plans to cut heat-trapping emissions and mostly seek unity with other nations to avert climate catastrophe that seemed to draw closer than ever in 2023.Injecting moral authority into the talks, Pope Francis said “the destruction of the environment is an offense against God” in a letter read on his behalf because he had to cancel pl...

Justice Sandra Day O’Connor paved a path for women on the Supreme Court. Four are serving today

WASHINGTON (AP) — One fall day in 2010, retired Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor slipped into the courtroom where she worked for nearly 25 years to take in an “amazing” sight. The first — and for 12 years, the only — woman on the high court saw three women in black robes among the nine justices.Recalling that day, O’Connor said she “saw a woman on the far right end of the bench, one on the far left end and one near the middle. That was pretty amazing.”O’Connor lived to see four women serve at the same time on the Supreme Court. What was once a novelty when she was the first woman to sit on the high court has become almost commonplace. In a sense, O’Connor was witnessing the culmination of her own journey, in which she struggled to get any legal job after graduating from law school in the 1950s, then ended more than 190 years of male exclusivity on the Supreme Court when President Ronald Reagan nominated her in 1981.O’Connor, who left the court in 2006, died Friday in Phoenix...

Macron says Israel ‘must more precisely define’ goal of Hamas assault

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 23:04:38 GMT

French President Emmanuel Macron said Israel “must more precisely define” what it seeks to accomplish in its war on the Palestinian militant group Hamas. “We are at a moment when Israeli authorities must more precisely define their objectives and their final goal: the total destruction of Hamas — does anyone think it is possible? If this is the case, the war will last 10 years,” Macron said on Saturday.Macron told a press conference at the COP28 climate summit in Dubai: “There is no lasting security for Israel in the region if its security is achieved at the cost of Palestinian lives.” Macron made the comments after the Israeli military intensified its bombing of the Gaza Strip, on the second day after a truce between Israel and Hamas collapsed, with Israel accusing Hamas of violating the terms of the agreement.A Palestinian official familiar with the truce efforts told the BBC the negotiations are completely stalled and there are currently no...

Mariano likens Massachusetts GOP to Washington Republicans after budget delayed a 3rd time

House Republicans blocked a $3.1 billion budget bill Saturday for the third straight day over concerns they have with money to respond to an influx of migrants in Massachusetts, a move House Speaker Ronald Mariano likened to tactics used by conservatives in Congress.Beacon Hill Democrats and Republicans have traded blame this week over who is at fault for delaying the controversial budget bill, which includes funding for public sector union contracts containing pay raises for tens of thousands of workers just ahead of the holidays.Speaking outside of the House Chamber minutes after Rep. Paul Frost, an Auburn Republican, stalled the budget bill, Mariano said he believes enough Democrats will be at the State House Monday to overcome the procedural tactic used by Republicans.MA LegislatureRep.
