AUSTIN (KXAN) — Austin Community College issued a warning Wednesday regarding fraudulent internship offers being sent directly to college students, which has included ACC students. ACC said it immediately notified students and employees about the issue.According to ACC, there have been reports of students receiving messages in their email accounts that appeared to have come from ACC faculty; however, the messages were delivered through non-ACC email addresses.“The emails tell victims they were selected for a paid internship. Students then receive a fraudulent check and are asked to purchase supplies from a shell-company vendor using the funds they received. After the victim has incurred the personal expense, they learn from their bank that the check they received is fraudulent,” the college said.ACC said those receiving such emails or similarly suspicious emails to alert ACC Police immediately at (512) 223-1231.The college said it wanted to remind students and employees that al...Former Longhorn DeMarvion Overshown wants to do it all for the Dallas Cowboys

An uncanny ability to abruptly change directions with the puck is one of the myriad skills that made Logan Cooley one of the top rookies in college hockey last season. An abrupt change of direction in regard to his career path means that Cooley’s first season with the Minnesota Gophers — in which he led the Big Ten in scoring, helped Minnesota return to the national title game for the first time in nearly a decade and was named USA Hockey’s national College Player of the Year — was also his final season of college hockey. On Thursday the Arizona Coyotes announced they signed the 19-year-old native of Pittsburgh to an entry-level contract. The move came after Cooley announced in May his intent to return for a sophomore college hockey season, although after attending the Coyotes’ development camp earlier in the month, he changed his description of a return to college from “when” to “if.”Details of the contract were not disclosed. For their part, the Coyotes seem to hav...3M Open: North Oaks’ Frankie Capan III’s 3-under 68 highlights local performances

Frankie Capan III bogeyed two of his first four holes Thursday in Round 1 of the 3M Open, seemingly a death sentence at the highly-scorable TPC Twin Cities in Blaine. He recovered with a birdie on his sixth hole of the day — the par-4 15th — but was still 1 over par heading into his second nine, holes 1 through 9.The North Oaks product admitted he may have put too much pressure on himself heading into the tournament. This week marks the sponsor exemption’s first regular PGA Tour event played as a pro. The tournament is being played 15 minutes from his home. Capan entered the event in excellent form amid a strong rookie season on the Korn Ferry Tour. He was excited to flash that form on the world’s top tour.On his second nine Thursday, that’s exactly what he did. Capan recorded four birdies and no bogeys over his final nine to turn in a 3-under 68 for the opening round. That leaves him in a tie for 23rd when the first round was suspended late Thursday. The top 65 and ties after Friday’...Senate passes annual defense bill, teeing up showdown with House

The Senate on Thursday night passed its version of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), teeing up a looming effort to find a deal on a compromise bill that satisfies the Democratic Senate and Republican House.Senators voted 86-11 on the bill, which authorizes a topline figure of $886 billion for fiscal 2024, the total that was included in the debt ceiling deal struck between the Biden administration and House Republicans. The package passed with little drama after the Senate kicked off consideration of the bill and amendments early last week. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) has repeatedly called on the chamber to move the process along in a bipartisan fashion. Six Democrats — Sens. Cory Booker (N.J.), Ed Markey (Mass.), Jeff Merkley (Ore.), Elizabeth Warren (Mass.), Peter Welch (Vt.) and Ron Wyden (Ore.) — voted against the bill, along with Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.). Four Republicans also opposed the package: Sens. Mike Braun (Ind.), Mike Lee (Utah), Rand P...Wildfire burning outside of Norwood in San Miguel County prompts pre-evacuation notice
