LEWISTON, Maine (AP) — Sunshine and a sense of relief swept through central Maine on Saturday with word that a man who was on the loose for two days after authorities said he killed 18 people had been found dead.Residents of Lewiston and surrounding towns had been told to stay home since Wednesday night, when authorities say Robert Card opened fire at a bowling alley and then a bar in shootings that also wounded 13 others. His body was found Friday at a recycling center in nearby Lisbon. Released from lockdown, many residents headed outside to enjoy a warm autumn day.“We can now begin to pick up the pieces, begin the grieving process,” said Jim Howaniec, a Lewiston native who served as mayor in the early 1990s. “We were sort of in limbo there for 48 hours, which really isn’t that long of a time, but of course it seemed like 48 years while it was going on.”Melissa Brown said sheltering in place reminded her of living in Washington, D.C., when snipers killed 10 people over a three-wee...

Future for fighting breast cancer may be a vaccine

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 17:03:08 GMT

The future for fighting breast cancer may be a vaccine.    Researchers at Cleveland Clinic started working on the preventive tool 20 years ago. Now they are enrolling patients in early safety and efficacy trials. The experimental vaccine is designed to fight triple -negative breast cancer, the most aggressive form that accounts for 15 percent of cases. The three-shot regimen targets a lactation protein expressed in the majority of triple negative tumors. If breast cancer develops, the body’s immune system is alerted to attack the protein-carrying tumor cells and keep them from growing. More from ‘Stories of Hope: Facing Breast Cancer’ Jennifer Davis, a mother of three, was the first person to receive the injections. She was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer in 2018.Early phase study results are expected by the end of 2023.

(The Hill) — Former President Trump gave a stark warning to enemies of the U.S. at the Republican Jewish Coalition Conference Saturday.“If you spill a drop of American blood, we will spill a gallon of yours,” the former president said during remarks. Trump spoke at length about the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, which is escalating as Israel expanded its ground operation into the Gaza Strip Saturday. Concerns about civilians in Gaza, who have already been struggling with Israeli airstrikes and blackouts, among other difficulties, and what could happen to them amidst the Israeli incursion into Gaza, have been heightened.“We have set two goals for this war: To eliminate Hamas by destroying its military and governing abilities and to do everything possible to bring our captives home. All Hamas terrorists are dead men walking — above ground, below ground, outside Gaza,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a speech earlier this week. Trump also turned his verbal f...

High school football: St. Thomas Academy’s offensive balance shines in section semifinal win over Two Rivers

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 17:03:08 GMT

St. Thomas Academy’s running game will always be centered on Savion Hart — rightfully so. The senior back is perhaps the best ball carrier in the state. He was again Saturday, running 23 times for 202 yards and a pair of scores — while having another 100-plus yards called back by holding penalties. But what’s different about this year’s Cadets offense is the numerous other ways in which it can beat you. Those were on full display in St. Thomas Academy’s 47-14 home victory over Two Rivers in the Class 5A, Section 3 semifinals.Maximus Sims completed 12 of his 17 pass attempts for 165 yards and a touchdown pass to Luke Dobbs. Senior running back Niko Vargas ran for four touchdowns of his own.
