DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) — A blast early Wednesday at a military base controlled by a Syria-backed Palestinian faction in eastern Lebanon killed five Palestinian militants and wounded 10 others, according to two Palestinian officials with the group. The faction said an Israeli airstrike caused the blast, but that account was disputed by an Israeli official, speaking on condition of anonymity, who denied the country had any role in the incident. Israel does not typically respond to foreign reports.In Beirut, a Lebanese military official said the explosion was the result of a blast within the base, adding that there was no airstrike. An F-5 aircraft jet encountered a technical problem forcing the pilot to eject, according to the Naval Air Station Key West Public Affairs Office.The incident occurred at 9:21 a.m. approximately six miles from Naval Air Station Key West’s Boca Chica Field.Within minutes of the pilot’s ejection, a search and rescue operation was launched to locate and retrieve the pilot.Fortunately, the pilot was located and rescued, avoiding any serious injuries. He was transported to a nearby hospital in the Miami area for further evaluation and treatment. The Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a disturbance call in Dania Beach prompting them to block off entrances and exits to a hotel.On Wednesday morning, authorities were dispatched to the Rodeway Inn and Suites located at 2440 FL-84 where they made contact with an adult male who then proceeded to attack a deputy. In response, the deputy fired his weapon, and the adult male retreated and barricaded himself inside a room.Employees were told they could not enter the hotel.One witness said they only saw one firetruck, but then noticed more activity in the back of the building.BSO’s SWAT team said with help from their K-9 they were able to safely apprehend the individual. It does not appear the suspect was injured by the deputy’s gunfire.
