After delays, Texas Senate agrees on Paxton impeachment trial rules

AUSTIN (Nexstar) — After two days of delays and private deliberation, the Texas Senate voted Wednesday night to approve rules for the upcoming impeachment trial of suspended Attorney General Ken Paxton.The trial is scheduled to begin on September 5. Paxton is ordered to appear before the Senate at 9:00 a.m. on that date.The recommendations were drafted by a seven-member Senate committee that was appointed at the end of the regular legislation session in May. Back then, the upper chamber voted to allow the panel to work as a "caucus of the whole" — meaning, they are about to conduct business in private. The seven senators had broad power in forming how the Senate trial will operate, which could significantly impact Paxton’s prospects of keeping his position in an impending trial. Lt. PORTER, Minn. — A 27-year-old man died after being trapped in a grain bin Tuesday near the western Minnesota community of Porter.The Yellow Medicine County Sheriff’s Office received a call around 9:30 a.m. Tuesday regarding two people trapped in a grain bin.A 62-year-old man had freed himself from the bin. However, the 27-year-old man was still trapped inside when first responders arrived, according to Chief Deputy Travis Peterson.Rescue personnel worked for about an hour removing the grain from the bin before the 27-year-old was located. A western Minnesota man was found dead Saturday in his cell at the Lac qui Parle County jail in an apparent hanging.Dennis Eugene Kipp, 60, of Graceville, was found dead just before 4 p.m. in the jail in Madison, where he was being held pending a drug possession charge from Big Stone County, according to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.Kipp was the only person in his housing unit at the time, and he was declared dead at the scene, the BCA said in a news release.The Lac qui Parle County Sheriff’s Office asked the BCA to investigate. ST. LOUIS - Janae Edmondson, the 17-year-old Tennessee volleyball player who lost her legs in a crash downtown, filed a lawsuit against the City of St. Louis.Edmondson filed the suit on Tuesday, and among the list of defendants is Daniel Riley, 21, who police say is responsible for the crash.In February, Edmondson was walking with her family back to the hotel after leaving a volleyball tournament when the crash occurred.Authorities said Riley who was out on bond from another case, sped through a yield sign at the intersection and hit another car. The second car crashed into Edmondson, causing both of her legs to be amputated.Riley pleaded not guilty in connection with the crash.Additional details are limited at this time. Family members and friends are sharing their memories of a Southern California couple killed in a shooting at an EDM festival in Washington state over the weekend.Josilyn Ruiz, 26, and Brandy Escamilla, 29, both of whom were from the Los Angeles area, were attending Beyond Wonderland near the city of George on Saturday night when a gunman opened fire on a crowd in an area where people were camping, authorities said.Josilyn Ruiz (left) and Brandy Escamilla were killed when a gunman opened fire at an EDM festival in Washington state on June 17, 2023.
